The source status detects common EXIF, GPS directory, XMP, IPTC, text, and color-profile markers where practical. It reports tag families without displaying personal tag values. Choose Remove metadata to decode the image into an sRGB canvas and encode only the rendered pixels into a new file. The browser applies EXIF orientation before drawing, so a portrait stays upright.
Understand what the status proves.
Inspection is limited to the first 1 MiB, and some formats can store tags after the compressed picture data. “No recognized metadata” describes that inspection, not an exhaustive proof. Re-encoding avoids copying source tags, but the browser may add its own resolution or encoding metadata. Malformed tag structures are reported when detected. This tool is not a forensic sanitization guarantee; it also cannot remove personal details visible in the picture itself.

PNG is the default because it avoids an extra lossy compression step and preserves transparency. JPEG and WebP may change visible detail. JPEG flattens transparency onto the chosen color. Original color profiles are not preserved, and animated PNG or WebP becomes a single browser-selected frame. The cleaned file can be larger than the original.
